ACTS OF KINDNESS
Homeless shelters in Compton are
needed because the homeless problem has increasingly become a public
concern in our community, particularly for low or no income single women and
women with children, the mentally ill, individuals with unemployable
skills and individuals facing the (5) year deadline (welfare reform) for
county assistance. As community advocates for the homeless, our
intention is to help these families to develop and maintain adequate
financial stability to meet their current and future needs.
Over the years, we have had numerous helping hands
and volunteers help us through our journey. Mr. Michael Kahler an
excellent educator and mentor at Vista High Continuation School
has volunteered his help to our shelter for several years. He and his
students at Vista High Continuation School organized and executed a
shelter renovation project for our facility. At the time, we had paint
peeling from the structure, the garden and front yard was far from a
horticultural success with bare flower beds and dirt
patches impersonating a lawn. Mr. Kahler, and his students,
turned our ordinary dwelling into house with curb appeal and a place our
residents are proud to call home.

Mr. Kahler and his generous and
energetic high school students arrived everyday after school to begin
the work on our facility and each stayed long after the sun had set.
Each student worked hard and as a team from preparation to completion.
We are very grateful that Mr. Kahler and his students chose our shelter
for renovation and am blessed to have Mr. Kahler and his
students in our lives.
Compton Welfare Rights Organization, Inc. provides
free housing, food and employment resources for mothers with children
whom would otherwise take up residence in our streets. Homelessness is a
battle our organization has had conflict with daily for the past 18
years. With our experience, dedication and resources we are better able to assist
our clients towards gaining the fortitude to challenge today's competition of the world
with dignity, while assisting them in finding their personal power for
success.
Mr. Kahler and his students made it
possible for our clients to not only have a place to call home, but to
be proud of the home that they share together. Many thanks to Mr.
Michael Kahler and the students of Vista High Continuation School for
your hard work, compassion and humanitarian efforts, to you we are forever
thankful!
